Terpenes
Terpenes are the volatile molecules that give a plant its smell. Cannabis makes a lot of them, in the same glands that make cannabinoids, and they are the first thing you notice about a jar. They are also the part of cannabis chemistry most often oversold. This guide covers what terpenes are, which ones show up most, what the research supports, and what it does not.

What a terpene actually is
Terpenes are hydrocarbons built from repeating five-carbon isoprene units. The ones that dominate cannabis aroma are monoterpenes, ten carbons, and sesquiterpenes, fifteen carbons. Monoterpenes are lighter and evaporate readily at room temperature, which is why an open jar loses its top notes within hours. Sesquiterpenes are heavier and stay behind, which is why old flower smells flatter and more woody than it did fresh.
They are produced in the glandular trichomes on the flower surface, in the same secretory cells that produce cannabinoid acids. The plant does not make them for you. Terpenes deter some insects, attract others, and may help the plant handle heat and light stress. Their role in human experience is a side effect of that chemistry.
Because they are volatile, every step after the plant is cut removes some. Terpene content is not a fixed property of a cultivar. It is a property of a specific harvest, dried and cured and stored in a specific way, measured on a specific day.
The ones you will see named
A handful of terpenes account for most of what gets reported on cannabis lab panels. Knowing the aroma each one carries is useful. Reading a personality into it is not.
- Myrcene — earthy, herbal, slightly fruity. Often the largest single terpene by mass in a cannabis sample.
- Limonene — citrus peel. Common in many modern cultivars.
- Beta-caryophyllene — peppery, woody. A sesquiterpene, and unusual in that it binds the CB2 receptor in laboratory assays, which makes it the only common terpene with a documented cannabinoid-receptor interaction.
- Alpha- and beta-pinene — pine, fresh sap.
- Linalool — floral, lavender-like.
- Terpinolene — bright, piney, a little sweet. Less common, and distinctive when present.
- Humulene — hops, dry and woody. The same compound that makes hops smell like hops.
- Ocimene and bisabolol — sweet-herbal and soft-floral respectively, usually in smaller amounts.
The entourage effect, honestly
The entourage effect is the proposal that cannabinoids and terpenes together produce something different from cannabinoids alone. It is a reasonable hypothesis and it is repeated as settled fact far more often than the data support.
The strongest piece of it is the caryophyllene finding above, which is real pharmacology but was shown in cell and animal work, not in people smoking flower. Beyond that, several controlled human studies have looked for terpenes modulating the subjective effects of THC at the concentrations actually present in cannabis and have not found a clear signal. Some preclinical work does suggest terpene activity at other receptor targets. The field disagrees with itself, and the honest summary is that the mechanism is plausible, the human evidence is thin, and the concentrations involved are very low compared with the doses used in most laboratory studies.
None of that means terpenes do not matter. Aroma and flavor are a large part of why one jar is preferred over another, and that is a real, measurable preference. It is a different claim from a pharmacological one.

Terpenes are not the whole smell
This is the part most terpene write-ups leave out. The loud gassy, skunky, savory notes that people chase are not well explained by the terpene panel at all. Analytical work published in recent years traced those notes to volatile sulfur compounds present at very low concentrations, alongside esters and other minor volatiles that standard terpene panels do not report.
That has a practical consequence. Two samples can have near-identical terpene profiles on paper and smell nothing alike, and a lab panel showing a high total terpene percentage tells you the sample is aromatic, not what it smells like. If you are trying to predict aroma from a number, you are working with an incomplete list.
Why a terpene percentage does not transfer
A total terpene figure from a lab is a snapshot of one lot. Grow the same cut in a different room and the number moves. Dry it warmer and the number drops. Leave it in a jar on a shelf for six months and it drops again, and the profile shifts as the light monoterpenes leave faster than the heavy sesquiterpenes.
Breeders rarely publish terpene figures at all, and when they do it is usually a list of dominant terpenes rather than a percentage. On this site a terpene is listed only where a breeder or a lab report names it, and a strain with no terpene data has no terpene data rather than an assumed profile.
What a grower can actually control
Genetics set the ceiling. Everything after that is loss management. The levers that matter most are the ones that keep volatile compounds in the flower instead of in the air.
- Harvest timing. Terpene content peaks and then declines as flowers over-ripen, and the peak does not always line up with peak cannabinoid content.
- Dry temperature. A slow dry in the mid-teens Celsius holds far more volatile content than a fast warm dry. This is the single biggest post-harvest lever.
- Handling. Trichome heads break off with friction. Rough trimming, tumbling, and repeated pouring cost aroma.
- Storage. Cold, dark, airtight, and full. Headspace in a jar is somewhere for terpenes to go.
What to take away
- Terpenes are volatile, so their content is a property of a harvest and its handling, not a fixed trait of a cultivar.
- Caryophyllene is the one common terpene with documented cannabinoid-receptor activity, shown in laboratory work rather than in people.
- The entourage effect is a plausible hypothesis with weak human evidence. Treat confident claims about it with suspicion.
- Sulfur compounds and other minor volatiles carry aroma notes that terpene panels do not report, so the panel is an incomplete picture of smell.
- Slow drying, gentle handling and cold dark storage preserve more aroma than any additive or supplement.
