Rosin pressing
Rosin is what comes out when you squeeze cannabis material between heated plates. No solvent, no purge, no recovery equipment. That simplicity is why it spread, and it is also why the variables that remain matter so much. This guide covers inputs, temperature and pressure, bag selection, what a cold cure actually is, and what to expect in yield.

What rosin is, and what it is not
Heat softens the resin and lowers its viscosity. Pressure forces it out of the source material and through a filter bag. What collects on the parchment is rosin: cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and lipids, with whatever else was small enough to come along.
Because nothing is added, nothing has to be removed, which is the safety argument for the method. It is not a purification step. Rosin from contaminated input is contaminated rosin, and pesticides, mould and residual chemicals all come through. The press cannot fix the starting material.
Inputs, in order of ceiling
You can press flower, dry sift or ice water hash, and the choice sets the quality ceiling before any setting is chosen.
Flower rosin is the accessible option. Yields are modest, and the product carries more plant-derived lipids and pigment, which shows in colour and in how it behaves over time. It is a reasonable use for material you already have.
Hash rosin, pressed from ice water hash, is the reason the method has the reputation it does. Because the separation work was done in the wash, the press only has to melt and filter what is already almost pure resin. Yields relative to the input are much higher, temperatures can be lower, and the result is cleaner in every respect.
Dry sift sits between the two and behaves similarly to hash at the higher-purity end.
A hard constraint applies to hash: it needs to be properly dried before pressing. Water in the input turns to steam under heat and pressure, and the result is a blowout and a mess.
Temperature and pressure
Temperature is the main lever and the ranges differ by input. Flower is commonly pressed somewhere around 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, with longer holds at the lower end and faster presses at the higher end. Hash presses cooler, commonly in the region of 60 to 75 degrees, because there is no plant matter to work through and the resin flows readily.
The general rule is that lower temperature preserves more terpenes and yields less, and higher temperature yields more and costs aroma. Higher temperatures also pull more undesirable material from flower. Most people settle on a setting per input type and then stop moving it.
Pressure is the variable most often quoted wrongly. A hydraulic gauge reading tons or PSI at the ram says nothing useful on its own, because what matters is the force per unit area on the material itself. The same ram pressure applied to a small puck and a large one produces very different results. Work from the size of the pressing area, not from the gauge, and apply pressure progressively rather than slamming to full load.
NoteRamp slowly. A gradual build lets resin escape as it liquefies. A sudden load ruptures the bag and pushes source material out with the rosin.
Bags and preparation
Filter bags are specified by micron rating, and the choice trades filtration against flow.
- Flower generally uses coarser bags, commonly in the 90 to 115 micron range, because the material needs somewhere for resin to escape.
- Ice water hash uses finer bags, commonly around 25 to 45 microns, because the input is already clean and a tighter filter costs little flow.
- Dry sift sits in between, often around 37 to 90 microns depending on how clean the sift is.
- Pre-pressing the material into a firm, even puck before it goes near heat improves flow and reduces blowouts. Loose material channels.
- Flower moisture matters. Bone-dry flower presses poorly; material rehydrated to around the normal storage range presses better.
After the press
Fresh rosin is a liquid that will separate and change texture on its own. The techniques for managing that are ordinary physical processing, not additives.
A cold cure means holding the collected rosin in a sealed jar at refrigerator temperature for a period of days. Over that time the material homogenises and typically firms up into a consistent texture. Nothing is added and nothing is removed.
Whipping is agitation, usually with gentle warmth, to force a uniform texture rather than waiting for one. It is faster and generally costs some aroma.
If rosin is left untreated it will often separate visually, with a grainier fraction and a more liquid one. That is normal physical behaviour and not a defect, though it is why so much effort goes into texture control.
Storage is cold, dark and airtight, the same as everything else. Rosin degrades with heat and light, and terpenes leave a warm open jar quickly.
Yield, and safety
Yield figures get quoted as though they were specifications. They are not. What you get depends on the input, the cultivar, the settings, the press and what is being counted as the input weight. Flower yields are low; hash rosin yields relative to the hash input are much higher. Anyone quoting a single precise number without stating all of that is describing one press, not a rule.
On safety: a hydraulic press is a machine that applies large forces through small gaps, and the plates are hot enough to burn on contact. Keep hands clear of the plate area entirely while pressure is applied, use a press with a guard, and treat a bag failure under load as something that throws hot material rather than as an inconvenience.
What to take away
- Rosin is heat and pressure only. It filters, it does not purify, and contaminated input gives contaminated output.
- Input sets the ceiling: hash rosin is cleaner and yields far better relative to input than flower rosin.

- What matters is force per unit area on the material, not the number on the hydraulic gauge. Ramp pressure gradually.
- Cold curing is just sealed cold storage over days. It changes texture; it adds nothing.
